How to Measure a Truck Bed for a Ladder Rack

Getting a ladder rack that fits your truck perfectly starts with accurate measurements. If you’re looking to add a rack for work or personal use, there are some key steps you got to follow to make sure it’s done right. But it’s not too complicated! You’ll need a few tools, a bit of time, and some attention to detail to get this sorted.

    Tools You’ll Need Before Measuring

Before jumping into the measurements, grab a tape measure, maybe a notepad or your phone to jot down some quick notes, and a level surface to park your truck on. Your measurements need to be precise. A slight error could mean the ladder rack doesn’t fit as snug as it should.

Step 1: Measure the Length of Your Truck Bed

First thing you do: measure the truck bed’s length. Start from the inside edge of the tailgate (with the tailgate closed) all the way up to the inside of the bed wall that’s behind the cab. This measurement is your truck bed length.

Pro tip: Don’t measure the exterior length, as racks are designed for the interior dimensions of your truck bed.

A typical truck bed length can vary depending on the truck model, but most pickups will have a bed that falls in the range of 5.5 feet to 8 feet. Be sure to confirm this length, as it directly impacts the type of ladder rack you can install.

Step 2: Measure the Width Between the Bed Rails

After you’ve got the length, you’ll now need the width. Measure the distance between the inside of the bed rails. The ladder rack is typically designed to sit on top of these rails or inside them, depending on the model. This width measurement is essential because some ladder racks are adjustable to fit a range of truck widths, while others are fixed.

A good ladder rack usually fits most widths, but be precise. Measure from one rail to the other at both the front and the back of the truck bed. In some cases, the truck bed might not be perfectly rectangular, and knowing the exact dimensions will save you a headache later on.

Step 3: Measure the Height of the Truck Bed

Next, it’s time to measure the height. Measure from the base of the bed to the top of the truck bed rails. Knowing this height is important when choosing a ladder rack. Some racks sit taller than others, and the height of your bed could determine how well they fit.

For example, if you’re carrying items that stick up above the rack, like ladders or pipes, the bed height will also matter when considering clearance under bridges or garage doors. Make sure to consider how much extra height you’re okay with.

Step 4: Consider Any Additional Features

If you have additional accessories on your truck, like tonneau covers, a toolbox, or bed liners, make sure these are factored in when measuring for your ladder rack. Some ladder racks are compatible with tonneau covers, but others are not. If you’re not careful, you might end up buying a rack that doesn’t work with what you’ve already got installed.

    Common Mistakes to Avoid

Now that you know the basics, here are a few common mistakes people make when measuring their truck bed for a ladder rack:

    • Forgetting to account for bed liners. These can add a small, but significant difference to your measurements.
    • Ignoring the rail height. A ladder rack that’s too tall or too short can cause issues.
    • Assuming all trucks are the same. Even within the same brand or model, truck beds can differ by year or trim level. Always measure, don’t guess.

Final Thoughts on Measuring for a Ladder Rack

Measuring your truck bed correctly is crucial when choosing a ladder rack. Taking the time to measure everything precisely will ensure that your new ladder rack fits well and functions properly. Always double-check the specs of both your truck and the rack to ensure compatibility.

With proper measurement and installation, you’ll be all set to transport your gear, tools, or equipment safely and securely.
